Happy Birthday, Low Angle Productions!

A year ago, I wrote a post stating how I could not believe that we've gotten to where we were. It all started with training on Sundays at Bukit Bintang Boys School, and we'd fool around after class. And then Hong decided to bring his camcorder and shoot 2 Half Naked Mans. I swear the title still tickles me! That was year 1 of Low Angle Productions, and the 1st ever video contest we joined was My Life My Way, in which we submitted My Belt and won Grand Prize... You could view Low Angle Productions' Year 1 history in the following posts.

Year 2 was full of its own brand of merry and gay (literally and figuratively) times. We shot an estimate of 15 videos from Year 1 till Year 2, and the we participated in our 2nd video contest which was for a snack, Corntoz. We won Grand Prize yet again... and then Ramly at War came along and we met a host of interesting and great friends, and that actually marked the start of our exposure in the independant film makers' circuit. We move on to our current year. Year 3... we have reduced the number of short clips, but we have made each short film with emphasis in quality. Unsecured Loan II premiered in April, and its final cut was finished late June. All of a sudden, we find ourselves being contacted by film makers who expressed interest in working with us. We joined our 3rd video contest, this time from Maggi My Way. Results have yet to be announced, but we look forward to good news. Next thing we knew, we were advertising for Mr Potato, and one of us got starstruck as well =)

The Prod Series Ep 1 - Unsecured Loan 2

Today ‘The Prod’ interviews one of our local rising action stars. Introducing Garry E of LA Prod. Interviewing him is none other than his LA Prod counterpart, Terry Saw.

T: So tell me, how does it feel like to be a rising action star?
G: Malicious.

T: Wow, that’s quite an answer. Can you elaborate on that please?
G: Actually, it feels great when random people from the arts industry come up to me and say, “Hey, aren’t you that guy who was emotional in that loan shark short film?” I’m just saying Malicious because that’s my personal nickname and I just like to say it.

T: … Okay, now moving on, tell us a little about how you got involved in making short action films. I’m sure there are lots of youngsters out there who look up to one such as yourself for inspiration.
G: Malicious… I started out with a group of Karateka’s about two years ago and we did a short film called ‘Just Fight’. That one took us a month to film! After that, we did a series of short ‘test fights’ which also featured two new members at the time. Our big break came when we attended an independent film screening at Palate Palette in KL. There, we met Juliane Block and next thing we knew, we were shooting our first actual short action film.

T: So that was how you got involved in Ramly at War?
G: Yes… I mean, malicious!

T: That’s nice. Now, you play the lead role in Julianne Block’s latest short film due to be released soon, titled Unsecured Loan 2. Can you talk a bit about your character?
G: Basically my character is malicious, like me.

T: …
G: Okay, seriously now. My character, William is in trouble with the loan sharks for not being able to repay his debts. As he begs for an extension, Mr. Singh the boss cuts him a deal. Kill a man, and all his debts will be settled. The plot thickens when the hunter becomes the hunted.

T: Sounds interesting. What would you say is the toughest part of filming?
G: The part where I had to be very… emotional…

(at this moment Garry become rather emotional, so the interview had to be stopped)

T: Alright, so that was Garry E from LA Prod, Malaysia’s upcoming action talent. He is available for casting in all sorts of roles, from being bad to being emotional. Fighting the Block

Here's an interesting article by LAProd's Terry. No, it has nothing to do with fighting Juliane Block (director of Ramly at War Begins, and Unsecured Loan 2), though she's tall and looks like she might be able to kick my arse. Instead, it touches on obstacles you might face, training as a martial artist.

Here we go:

There are times in a Martial Artists’ life when he/she finds him/herself stuck in a plateau. No matter how hard you train, you just don’t see any progress. To top it all off, you’re at the peak of your learning capabilities and find yourself learning ‘nothing’ every time you attend a class.

You feel like giving up. Training has become a chore, boring. You’ve lost interest.

But is this the end?

Not necessarily. There are steps you can take to kick start your Martial Art’s lifestyle.

1) Take a Break.
When you’ve hit the ceiling, take a breather and step back to look at the bigger picture. It is like taking a day off from work to do something you enjoy. Most times, after a period of docility, you’ll bounce back with more vigour than before.

2) Try something new.
Sometimes a road block can mean you have difficulty understanding something the way it’s been taught. Sometimes you think there’s something better out there. So go out and explore. Often you’ll learn something about your own art when it’s been presented in a different light. You may even discover you enjoy a totally different Martial Art and develop the drive to train again.

3) Find out what’s missing.
What is it that drew you towards this art in the first place? Knowledge is infinite, so what is it about this art form that you’ve failed to learn? Are you doing something wrong? Have you been taking your own training lightly? Do you understand what’s being taught? Once these questions have been answered you will often find the reason to return to training.

4) Innovate.
Doing the same drills all over again? Time to change. Try different training techniques and explore other forms of exercise (i.e. yoga, dance, etc.) and combine different elements to create your own brand of training and exercise.

5) Meditate on the philosophy.
Martial Arts are life long learning processes. As such, there’s no way you can ‘learn’ everything in 10 years or much less as the future generations seem to think. Meditate on the philosophy passed down by your masters. What is there for you to gain which you have not discovered yet? Usually such knowledge comes with time, experience and unfortunately age. Sticking to a particular art may very mean you’ll find its secrets one day.

6) Live it.
Martial Arts’ is a way of life. Use its teachings to help you live a more purposeful life. By following its philosophies, you will often discover more to the art than the movements and the exercise. And even if you don’t find yourself doing the exercises anymore, you are still a Martial Artist if you live by its code.

Crime Investigation Channel - The Al Maunah Weapons Heist (behind the scenes stills)

After a 2 month hiatus, we have returned with some interesting content. Naturally, it'll be no fun if I posted them all on the same day, then you wouldn't return the next day to check for new content, and that wouldn't be very fun, would it? =)

In September, LAProd was involved in a documentary shoot which highlighted the incident of a weapons heist, with which a group of civilians dressed as army men managed to obtain weapons from an armory, enough to start off a mini war!

LAProd was employed to act as some of the terrorists for the 2 day shoot, holding replica M4A1's with grenade launchers, dressing up with army fatigues and hoods. Check us out, the profiles of different types of terrorists in LAProd (after all, variety works):

The shoot lasted 2 straight days, and we were exhausted when we were done with it all. The outcome of the exhaustion was the scariest that could happen to us... we had:

2 sleeping terrorists and 1 depressed in the centre.

A dead terrorist, who lays like sleeping beauty hoping that Prince Charming would one day awaken him with true love's kiss.

A terrorist gone insane, thinking he can hear voices from the helmets.

Terrorists celebrating their madness and exhaustion.

Having started training Taekwondo at the age of 7, Michelle actively competed and was often seen in the ring since year 2000, whilst representing the state and has been a national representative for Malaysia from 2005. She has always been an achiever, having won numerous tournaments, frequently winning the best female overall champion and best female performer titles. She is currently a 4th degree black belt holder, and is slowly retiring from local tournaments. Having started training in karate at the age of 16, Hong's enthusiasm for martial arts has led to his regimental training of the often 4 times a day in a 3 day week training schedule. He was known for his speed and his kicks which never failed to impress. Hong progressed to being a 3rd Dan in Goju-Ryu Karate-do in 2001. Subsequently, his interest in Wushu built up and was selected to trained with the Selangor Wushu team in 2002. Having participated in competitive patterns and forms, Hong gathered an impressive array of moves and diversifying his form. He still currently trains with the Goju-Ryu Karate-do Kenpo Seibukan Association of Malaysia regularly. Hong directed all of LAProd's action videos.

Aspirations:
By creating more quality action sequences, Hong hopes to gain exposure and work with film makers and people in the movie making industry, focusing on martial arts and fight action scenes. Hong also wishes to learn from the professionals in the stunt industry.

What is Ramly at War?

After all these practise videos, action teaser, and the on-location shoot preview, you must be pretty curious over why the title is Ramly at War.

I might have purposely mislead you to think that I would even dare reveal the story line or the theme of the film by questioning, "What is Ramly at War?".

No doubt, you've seen the poster.
No doubt, you've seen the action teaser.
No doubt, you've seen some of us with our costume and make up from FB.
No doubt, there were quite a number of gay jokes relating to the pictures taken.

And still, I have not answered your question. I'll tell you what Ramly at War meant to us at LAProd...

New friends:

We got to Ampang Galaxy mall, not knowing what kind of people to expect. The director mentioned that the bikers might look fierce and intimidating, but they were the most shy and nice people around! Needless to say, we needed to see it for ourselves. Here are some of the interesting people we met.

Let's start with the director, Juliane Block. Being a German, quality of work seems to be her top priority. She is seldom out of chocolate but when she is, my best guess is that she'll rip apart anything & everything that stands in her way. Have you seen how tall she is?? Anyway, we've known Juli for a few months already. Lovely gal!

And on to the producer. There's Danny 'dC' Chua, who might look scary, but is actually harmless like a teddy bear. Of course, you shouldn't mess with bears either way, you might regret doing so.

Danny: "All hope is lost for humanity".

Then there's the Director of Photography, Deckster Kaitaua. When I first met him, he reminded me a lot of a manager I used to work with, and I liked the guy a lot. His nipples almost poked someone's eye out when he went topless while handling the camera because it was getting cold on the set.

Deckster: "I enjoyed the durian scene in SS2".

There's basically too many people to cover, so I'll put up captions for each coming picture.

Diversity in Fight Styles:
Well, I am unable to elaborate on that, because you have to watch the fights to see the different styles of fighting we choreographed. This is a big step for us, because all these whiles, our fights have been in a way generic fighting. Exploring the speed possibility and the technical movesets have opened our minds to other ideas. It will be very interesting to see where our training brings us, along with the opportunities that might present themselves. We're getting better (I wanna say we're good, but shy la).

An investment for the future:
Why do I say that? Because Ramly at War is what the production unit calls a no budget short film. No one got paid to act or fight in it, in fact there were generous people who sponsored stuff to eat and drink. The bikers trustingly left their choppers at the shooting location for our perusal. So what kind of investment are we talking about? That's right.... it's become our new showreel :0)

Now that it's more or less said and done, shooting wrapped up on the 12th July 2009, and it has become our most memorable shoot ever, because it is our 1st major work with people from the industry, and we're glad we met them 1st. LAProd wishes to thank everyone involved in the production of Ramly at War for making the fight sequences successful. See you at the premiere screening!

In preparation for the coming shoot for Ramly at War prequel, we have submitted ourselves to numerous tortures and injuries. Multiple test fights were shot and reviewed to improve on the action sequences.

Injuries, though nothing serious nor permanent, include:
1. Bleeding nose
2. Sprained shoulders
3. Bruised hips
4. Bruised arms and shins
5. Sprained fingers
6. Strained necks
7. Sore muscles

Causes in the same order of the injuries:
1. A fantastic take down ending with the nose crashing into someone else's hip bone.
2. A throw & crash landing that ended with a loud thud & an awkward landing whilst fatigued.
3. Kicks to the hip in revenge for the bloody nose.
4. Punches & kicks exchanges.
5. Blocking kicks with an initially sprained thumb.
6. Falling, & shooting while lying down with the head tilted up.
7. No warm-ups before fighting.

Sounds like so much fun yea? I just can't wait for this weekend to come!

LA Prod Members on vacation on Perhentian Island

We're fresh back from our time away on the island, got some time-off to focus on the up-coming productions and the changes that are happening to our lives. Please check our Facebook fan page for additional photos.

I can see how seriously things are coming together now with the mass emails being sent out on every detail of the shoot. I wish the best for the project(Ramly at War), I'm sorry that I won't be around to participate for that. I do look forward to the finished product, (guys please mail me the DVD when the film is complete)

I suppose it is also the unofficial send-off for me as I leave to further my studies overseas. I will definitely miss the group, the weekly(bi-weekly,tri-weekly) training, the outings(Halong Bay, Penang, Perhentian.. etc) and stunt filming.

I am proud to have been part of something bigger than just ourselves.

Hopefully we'll meet up again in the future for a collaboration.

Seriously, I never thought we'd get this far. I can hazily remember how it all started 370 days ago (19th May 2008). Sunday training was a regular thing for us guys, and we'd do crazy stuffs post training. And one fateful day, Hong decided to bring his trusty Camcorder. This, my friends, is the life of the party that got us where we are right now:

JF#1 was the 1st official product and at its conclusion, Low Angle Productions was born! I swear to you, everytime I decide to watch JF#1 again, I laugh to see how bad we were back then. None of us could act, our reactions were off, and there were so many things we couldn't do!

And then we met Michelle, which I swear was an honest case of mistaken identity. An ex-colleague of mine once introduced another girl whose name is Michelle, and when Moses said "Michelle is a TKD representative for Malaysia", I was delighted! So I arranged to meet 'Michelle' again, only to find out that we've never actually met! Hilarious! Nevertheless, she joined us in our training, and OMG we're having so much fun!

Now that's what I call high kick girl! Michelle doing her 'thang!

Then through Choon, we met the bomb TnT. Teresa and Terry(sa) are a couple, and Teresa runs the Living Arts Studio which was once based in Sunway. The studio has moved to a better location now. LAP would like to thank Teresa for her support of the group by lending us the space to train.

We went Test Fight after Test Fight to improve our screen fighting skills and choreography. We even made a video in Halong Bay, Vietnam! The setting didn't turn out quite what we expected it to be, but the end result was satisfactory nevertheless!

We also got into an international collaboration when Max and Constantine from Germany paid us a visit! Wanna see some interracial action going on? (Well Max is actually Chinese, but he's brought up in Berlin, so I guess there's no interracial action after all :P) Check out the hardcore one-on-one action here. Just when we thought we got stagnant making Test Fights, we submitted the 2nd Test Fight and won in a short film competition! Unfortunately, the prize is taking very long to reach us winners.

It's been a while, for the past few weeks we have been busy training and with Hong's and Garry's live show, and helping out with Living Art's Dance Carnival.

So we finally went back to our roots and started another short choreography.

Our location shoot was in the Taman Tun Dr. Ismail Park. Choreo, Director, Camera man is Hong and Action performers are Adrian, Garry and William.

We drew some attention and got distracted a bit (shapely passer-by). But I think the video speaks for itself.

Malaysian Dance Carnival

Living Arts Studio hosted the Malaysia Dance Carnival last weekend. Boy, did we get some eye candy watching gorgeous babes dance away! The 1st day was a dance competition for children between 4 to 9 years old. And then we were treated some some dance showcase by some lovely ladies! You wanna see? You wanna see? No, I don't have the pictures with me no, haha! Perhaps I'll get my hands on them, then post it up in the next entry. Oh, the anticipation!!

The next day was the dance competition for teens 10 to 17 years old. There was pole dancing showcase too, in which I heard 'someone' shot a vid of it from a low angle! I don't have the vid with me either, so all those will be in the next entry if I get my hands on them for you! *droolz*

Terry of Laprod also gave a showcase of Capoeira, solo! Check it out!

Sometimes I get so jealous of him, I hope his face finds the ground hard when he's doing his thing...

Fashion Week @ 1 Utama! part 2

And so, the posting continues on the experience we had during Fashion week. I only find it appropriate to write this post today, because Fashion week at 1 Utama ended today.

And so, Sunday night was the rehearsal for the fashion show on Monday night. We got there on time, but being Malaysians, we expected the rehearsals to begin late, and to end late as well, nothing uncommon about that. We did our 1st rehearsal of the piece which we choreographed, only to be told that it's too long for the show. We were asked to choreograph a 3 minutes piece, and eventually we cut it down to 1/2 minute!

And so, we went through the 1st rehearsal of our 1/2 minute piece with our jackets on, turned quite a number of heads with the noises we made, and proceeded wait for the models turn on their rehearsal, which would mean quite a long wait (kinda like how long it took for you to read till you got here).

And so, we started posing for pictures! One of the few examples....

And so, almost an hour passed after the 1st rehearsal when we started our 2nd rehearsal run. It ended pretty late, we got home for sleep and were zombified the next day at work. Along came Monday evening which we had anticipated for quite a while. The show was to start at 7.30 pm and we were backstage preparing ourselves. Hong got himself a pair of nice shades to wear! It's a shame we didn't manage to take any nice photographs of him with the shades on. Refer to the previous post for the only picture with Hong in shades if you're a fan, by clicking here.

And so, while preparing, we ran through the choreography once more. To my horror, the shoe I wore flew while I kicked!! Our solution? Masking tape....
And so, our heart were thumping heavily 5 seconds away from show time. Even though we're used to public performances, we just couldn't control our heart rate. It was LAP's first live show after all. Here's the edited video of the rehearsals and the actual performance.

Fashion Week @ 1 Utama! part 1

2 weeks before, LAP was contacted by a friend who is in the artistic performance industry, to perform as the opening act for some big brands. Thus a conversation occured between Hong and I...

Hong : Whoa, performing live, this is gonna be a challenge!
Me : FUN!
Hong : Ok, now we'll need some references for our fight scene using the katanas.
Me : FUN!
Hong : And the we'll transition into something else!
Me : FUN!

Note in fine print: Conversation was dramatized for FUN's sake!

And so the preparations began! We'd train every Saturday till the late evenings, even using up Thursday trainings at our karate class. "Our first ever live show for LAP, gotta get it right!", we thought to ourselves! And so, several choreography exercises came up, which were ever changing due to circumstances! Finally, the day for rehearsal on site came, and we showed up fully dressed.

I like this picture, it rocks! More to come. We're pretty tired from all the waiting and the anticipation to perform.

We also had to do some posing for the cameras at the end of the fashion show.

It's a shame I didn't have shades on, but Hong looked cool as hell with his on! More to come in the next post.

Ooh, I know what you think! Some of the possibilities that crossed my mind:

That's right folks. LA Productions participated in a video contest late last year, thinking that the prizes were cash (RM 8000 for 1st place, RM 3000 for 2nd place, and RM1000 for 3rd place). We missed out the fine print that says "prizes worth RM8000 (in form of digital products)". Well, if we won some camcorders, it'll be real helpful for our future shoots, multiple cameras on location!

3. Summa cum laude, or in English meaning with highest praise (cum meaning with).

Several of LA Productions guys were CUM-ing at Palate Palette, KL last night and managed to mingle around with some really nice people! And you'd be imagining now, what's CUM??? Check them out.

Practice

I've always wondered why in the healthcare sector, there's this thing called 'medical practice'. Doctors put their knowledge to work everyday, calling it practice. So if everyday is a rehearsal, when is the real thing gonna come? I know, the whole argument is flawed, and it's just a play of words.

For us action performers, our 'practice' involved hitting each other in the face (not really) and striking the opponents' limbs till they become red! Check out Hong's arm at 0:42 of the video (or maybe because he's so fair, he turns pink when struck)!

Speaking of play of words, here's a joke (if you're offended by anything at all, do not continue reading, and we're not mainstream media, crude jokes are allowed).

In medieval England, there was this queen who could not be satisfied by her king (in bed of course), so she sought the kingdom's magician. He produced a stick, and gave the instructions "By commanding it 'Flying stick, flying stick, _________' (yes, wherever you want it to go), and behold it shall please you. To have it stop, just say 'Jingalashamistic' and back to its sheath it shall be". So the queen was happy for a long time.

One of her maidens found out after a while, and wanted to try out the excitement! So she went "Flying stick, flying stick, kiss my lips and make me happy!! ............... Oh dear! Oh my word!" (Just use your imagination). Alas, she did not know the magic word to stop the flying stick, and after saying "Stop! No more! Away! Shoo!" did not work, she started to try escaping from it. As she ran towards the castle guard outside, she told him that a flying stick was chasing her. And his response in disbelief??

"Up my @r$e!"

LA Productions recently paid Putra Perdana Park a visit. It's a nice place, really....that is if you minus the extreme heat wave and the smell of manure laid by the gardeners in the park. I mean, the smell's everywhere!

Anyway, we were all over the place, having arrived at the park at 1430 hours on Sunday. The park is actually quite well maintained, but the water features were out of commission and under renovations works... and that gave us the opportunity to jump into the water features and have some fun!

Believe it or not, we didn't really plan out much of a storyboard this time, and we just made up a lot of things on the way. I guess shooting really ate into us, and we now know what to prepare for in general. After having some prepostorous ideas here and there, we were already shooting when we were supposed to warm up. The sun already did it's job, and gosh, THE SUN SCORCHED OUR SKINS! I mean, look at how we were suffering already!

You can see the heat wave everywhere! It was so hot that all of us started to run around like madmen going berserk after lying under the sun being dormant for a couple of secs.

But you know what? having jogged and run around Putra Perdana Park, made me realise how similar this felt when I was playing Left 4 Dead. You know, that zombie game which 4 survivors had to blast their way past zombies across towns and some forest area, with those special zombies that could either puke on you and cause other zombies to be attracted to you, or pounce on you from some far off lamp post, and even grab you with it's super elongated tongue and drag you across the screen?

Yea, here comes an angry zombie!

Welcome, Max and Constantine (noooooooo......don't exorcise us little demons!) to Malaysia! LAProd had it's pleasure of having these 2 brothers come down all the way from Germany pay us a visit. And how did we chill out with our guests? Oh sure, we did loads of fun stuff!

1.) Walk around in the basketball court idle, chuckling like beavers.

I don't know who decided to take this picture, which seems to have no production value at all.

2.) Hug each other in a massive sweaty orgy and then looking happy about it.
